Steel Figures for June 2004

World crude steel production stood at just over half a billion tons for the first six months of 2004. 
Worldwide production has increased by 7.9% (to 503.3 million metric tons) compared to the first six months of 2003.

China again showed growth with production of 20.8 million metric tons (mmt) of crude steel in June, 
a rise of 13.8% on the same month of 2003. 

Crude steel production in Asia rose to 38.4 mmt in June, an increase of 8.2% on June 2003. 
YTD the increase is 11.9%. Asia accounts for 45.7% of world production in the first six months of 2004.

Production for the 25 countries in the European Union is up 4.3% YTD. Monthly production rose 7.6% compared to June 2003.

In the Middle East production rose by 5.3% compared to June 2003 and 4.7% YTD. 
Iran produced 770,000 tons of crude steel production in June, a rise of 9.7% on the same month in 2003. 
YTD production stands at 4.2 mmt, an increase of 7.2%.

Market Overview and Prices

In general, worldwide demand remains strong.
After a slowdown in China as the government tightened credit terms, a falling-away of re-exports indicates the possible resumption of stronger demand for imports. Some major Asian mills have been sufficiently encouraged to proceed with plans to increase their third quarter prices. Export volumes from Russia and Ukraine are reported to have fallen because of higher domestic demand and for seasonal reasons. Continued high pricing in the USA means more material will be attracted to that market.
EU mills have sold almost all their third quarter capacity. For plate the situation appears to be even tighter than in strip products. Many producers within the EU and in neighboring countries seem to be booked out for most of this year. Production cuts at some plate mills are exacerbating the tightness in supply.
Coke remains in short supply, leading to a reduction in the availability of slabs. In addition, demand for this product has recently gone up in North America and Asia, reducing the quantities available from suppliers in Brazil and Russia. Asian prices for slabs have increased by as much as $US60 per ton since the second quarter.
Prices of coils and plates have followed this trend. The prices of HRC products have zoomed to $750-780 per ton in the US. In the European markets, HR coil prices were in the range of $630-650. Only in China, the prices are still hovering around $580.
The days of massive price increases may be over, but a further advance, albeit a more modest one, seems a realistic proposition for the year’s final quarter.
