German NMH Stahlwerke attracts Saudi interest

Padua-based Acciaierie Venete is due to make a decision on whether to take on and revamp Germany’s NMH Stahlwerke within the next few weeks. Together with its partner, the southern German Scholz group, the Italian company has been in talks with the bankruptcy administrators and the Bavarian Land government for some time.

However, Venete and Scholz’s interest in NMH Stahlwerke is diminishing, say local industry reports. They would be required to build a new 80-100t EAF, which Scholz would supply with scrap.

NMH currently has a rated capacity of 400,000-500,000 t/y. Its products include bars, and profiles. Venete has a similar production range.
More recently, Saudi Arabia’s Al-Zamil group is also said to have shown some interest in the mill. They seem due to meet senior Bavarian government officials on 16 September.

The approach of the Bavarian government is unclear. In the past, it has been suggested that the Land might have been willing to subsidies the installation of a new furnace but could not afford a new EAF without  partners.
