Turkish finished steel consumption falls 34%, exports rise 36% in 2001

Turkish consumption of finished steel products fell 34% in 2001 compared to 2000, to 8.7m tonnes, according to the latest figures from the country’s Iron & Steel Producers’ Association. Carbon flats and longs consumption were respectively 4.3m tonnes and 4m tonnes.
Production of finished steel fell as well, but by only 10% to 12.9m tonnes, with 3m tonnes for flats and 9.6m tonnes for longs. As a consequence, exports rose a massive 36% y-o-y to 9.5m tonnes. The biggest increases were for billets and flats with a 77% rise for both categories. Billet exports last year were over 2m tonnes, a five-year record. Exports of long products increased 20% to 5.9m tonnes.
Meanwhile, imports decreased 32% to 4.2mt. Flats imports totaled 2.7m tonnes, down 26%, well below the levels of previous years.
  

Turkish Icdas Celik produces 200,000t/y from new specialty wire rod line

Turkey’s Icdas Celik is currently producing at a rate of around 200,000t/y from its new specialty wire rod line. The line has a capacity of 140t/h, says Danieli, which carried out the work; commissioning began in August last year. It has been commercially operating since the end of last year, it seems.
This is the first wire rod mill for specialty steels to operate in Turkey, says Danieli. It can produce 5.5-16mm wire rod in coils weighing up to 3,000kg for automotive applications.
The wire rod line was installed at the company’s 750,000 t/y bar mill at Icdas, near Istanbul. It is currently not working at capacity, because it operates jointly with the bar line.
Production is aimed at domestic market and export, with the largest part going to exports. The company’s main markets are Europe, Middle East, Far East and the USA.
  

ISDEMIR has been taken over by ERDEMIR

ISDEMIR has been taken over by ERDEMIR. Turkey’s only flat steel producer ERDEMIR, with its expertise, experience, know how, qualified man power, technology and a strong management synergy, will improve its strength. At the end of this merger, ISDEMIR will be a plant producing 2.000.000 tons of flat product and 500.000 tons of long product. The investments related with flat steel production will be about 650.000.000 US$. The investments planned to be made in ISDEMIR are expected to be completed in 5 years. With this merger ISDEMIR-ERDEMIR will be one of the 10 big steel producers in Europe.
The C.E.O. of ERDEMIR Mr. Sener Macun stated that the urgent modernization of ISDEMIR would be done immediately and the transformation to flat product investments would be commenced in 18 months period and completed in 5 years. MACUN also stated that in order to prepare ISDEMIR to flat steel production 270.000.000 US$ worth of investment would be made until year 2010.
  

Tin plate prices weaken in Turkey

Tin plate prices weaken in Turkey. Prices for single reduced tinplate in Eastern Europe and Turkey have fallen by as much as $50/t in recent months. In Turkey, Erdemir's list price was cut earlier from $565/t (base plus minimum extras) to $515/t.

Turkey's steel producer Eregli reported turnover of $750 mio. 2001

Eregli, Turkey's only flat steel producer Eregli reported turnover of $750 million in 2001, and targets turnover to rise to $850 million for 2002. A weaker Turkish lira in 2001 has increased export targets for many firms. Total sales in 2001 reached three million tons, including 1.1 million in exports, compared to 476,000 tons in 2000. 2002 target is sales of 3.15 million tons, 2.43 million domestically and 720,000 exports. More than 60 percent of the company's exports are to European countries. Total 2002 turnover target should reach $1.2 billion when activity at steelmaker Isdemir is included. Eregli is taking over Isdemir from the government and has agreed to invest $700 million over five years in the firm.
