Middle East Steel Output up by 6.6%

World crude steel production in April stood at about 83.4 million metric tons (mmt).
This means an increase by 6.5% compared to April 2003, and 8.4% year to date (YTD).
It is also the second highest-ever recorded monthly production.

Total Middle East steel Output was up (6.6%) compared to April 2003.
Iran produced 730,000 tons of crude steel production in April, a rise of 12.8% on the same month in 2003.
YTD production in Iran stands at 2.7 mmt, an increase of 8.2%.

China produced 20.9 mmt of crude steel in April a rise of 20.6% on April 2003.
For April 2004, Chinas apparent steel consumption exceeded 25mmt.
Chinas exports of finished steel totaled 830.000 tons.

Japan also showed an increase in April. Production rose to 9.2 mmt, up by 2.4% compared to the same month in 2003.

Market Overview and Prices

The downswing in the steel market in China has brought much talk of corrections in the over-heated economy, and fears of falling steel prices. There has been some knock-on effect in other Asian markets, but it has not yet had an impact on steel prices in the wider world, which generally remain strong.

East Asian SCRAP markets remain soft, with recent bookings for HMS 1 at $206/T CFR, Far Eastern Ports.

For LONG PRODUCTS, prices in China have shown a significant dip.
These prices remain however considerably higher than a year ago. The increase over the last twelve months has been nearly 55 percent for Rebars and only slightly less for rod and sections. Exports from China continue, with Q235 billets at around $320/T and rebars at $380/T CFR Far Eastern Ports.
Turkey targets 460 US$/T CFR Dubai for its rebars, but buyers are reluctant to pay this level. Beams prices remain strong with levels in the range of 620 to 660 US$/T CFR Dubai.

FLAT PRODUCTS prices in Asia present a different picture. Steadier levels of end-user demand have kept prices more stable. The pace of the rise in prices has slowed down from the frenetic upsurge that characterized the first few months of this year.
In North American prices for all flat products have increase sharply. Hot rolled coil and plate have shown the biggest gains, and now stand at more than double what they were worth a year ago.
Prices of hot rolled coil from the CIS countries are spread across a wide range from $400/ton to $590/ton fob Black Sea, depending on the destination.
Russian HRC is sold to the Middle East at $450/T fob, while Ukrainian HR coils are sold to the Middle East, Egypt and Morocco at about $400/T fob Black Sea.
Cold rolled coils get only a 50 to 60 US$ premium.
The plate market remains strong, with long lead times in West Europe.
Ukrainian prices for commercial plates are at around 540 to 570 US$, CFR M.E. ports.
