Steel Figures for May 2004

World crude steel production rose in May to 85.7 million metric tons.
Global production increased by 5.6 pct as compared to May last year and by 8.2 pct year- to-date (YTD).

Middle Eastern output came to 1.1 million metric tons in May 2004, which was identical to the crude steel production figures for the same period last year. However, the region does show a 4.1 pct  increase YTD.

Turkish output rose to 1.7 million metric tons in May, with a 10.7 pct increase over the same period last year.
On a YTD basis production increased by 12.1 pct.

African May production increased by only 0.8 pct as compared to May of last year and showed a decrease in production YTD of 1.2 pct
South Africa produced 819,000 tons of the 1.4 million tons produced by the region last month. South African YTD figures show only a 0.1 pct increase.

Output in China increased by 13.3 pct over May of 2003 and by 22.7 pct or 19.2 million metric tons during the first five months of 2004.
These latest figures show that Chinese production accounts for 24 pct of global steel production for the month of May.
Asian crude steel production reached 39 million metric tons last month, increasing by 7.2 pct over May 2003.

Output in the 25 European Union Countries, reached 16.9 million metric tons in May, an increase by 3.3pct over May 2003.

Output for the month in the C.I.S. amounted to 9.3 million metric tons, rising by 4.4 pct over May 2003 and by 7.3 pct since the beginning of the year.

Market Overview and Prices

Import prices into many Asian markets were on the wane, and there is a distinct feeling that the heat is going out of the steel market,
although recently there are signs of some upwards price corrections in HRC and steel plate again.

The 3e quarter 2004 may be the last time for mills in Asia, Europe and North America to secure further price increases.
Since the dip in Chinese domestic steel prices last month, further evidence has been emerging of the extent of the slowdown in the country’s growth rate. Having been rising at 20 percent for many months, the country’s steel production in May rose by only 13.3 percent, its lowest year-on-year percentage increase since December 2002.

Imports of iron ore and other raw materials into China registered a volume decrease in May.
China’s imports of steel products in May fell very sharply – by over 30 percent to 2.13 million tonnes, according to official figures.

Maybe more significant is the last months sale of heavy melting grade scrap into Korea at below $US200 per ton CFR. Only a few months ago, this product was selling for more than $US300 per ton, and these lower prices seem to be drawing Chinese buyers back into the market.

Part of the fall in CFR values of internationally traded material is attributable to the continued decline in ocean freight rates. In the last couple of weeks, these have fallen to their lowest levels in nine months, and are down by about 50 percent from their January peak.

Prices for flat rolled steel products in Europe have now in most cases reached their highest level in the last two decades.
Hot rolled coil late 1984 reached the equivalent of €420 per ton. The historic low point was reached in early 1999 (€209 per ton). But the current price of  €465 per ton, is the greatest for the past 20 years.
For hot rolled plate, the previous high of €427 per ton was reached in the spring of 1985. The low of €240 per ton was attained in early 1999. And the current record value is €515.

US steel imports amounted to 2.3 million mts in May, indicating a rise of 4% compared to April.
From April to May, the change in steel imports reflected increases in blooms, billets, slabs and cold rolled sheet.
In the first four months of 2004, steel imports reached 8.4 million mts against 7.5 million mts recorded in the corresponding period of last year. The largest commodity increases were in wire rods, blooms, billets and slabs. The largest country exporters to the US were Mexico, Canada, Brazil and Turkey.

The data shows that Turkey has exported 119.750 mts of finished steel to the US in May. This pace was 48.6% lower compared to April.

In the Middle East,
HRC prices from Ukraine were at 445 USD/t CFR Dubai levels , while Japan was selling some allocations of 1.2mm HRC at 610-620 US$/t.
Pate prices were around 540 to 560 from Alchevsk and Illiych, while West European prices remain very high with generally long delivery times.
Beam prices from INI Korea and West Europe remain strong at levels above 640 USD/T CFR onwards.
Dongkuk Korea and Japanese mills are reported to have sold at levels of 540-550 US$/t CFR for a limited size range of JIS beams
Angles from Ukraine sold at 440 USD/t, while smaller size angles and flats were bought form Korea and China at 480 - 500 USD/t.
