Market Overview and Prices

Carbon Steel
...................

- WORLDWIDE

With global steel production and consumption running at all-time highs,
steel prices around the world have been showing prodigious gains.
Economic recovery in Japan, Europe and America lies behind the sensational increases.
Additional factors are surging infrastructure and business developments in China, India and Middle East.

Comparing July/August prices in 2004 with those for the same period in previous years,
it is clear that current values are unparalleled in recent history for most parts of the world.

The US transaction price for hot rolled coil in the third quarter of this year is at over $US700 per.
US coil prices have shot up by more than 125 percent in the last twelve months.
Since they touched their low point of $US225 per ton in period three 2001, coil prices have advanced by a remarkable 215 percent.

in Japan, industry rationalization has been partly responsible for the surge in hot rolled coil prices.
There, the third quarter price of ¥62,000 per ton is 37 percent higher year-on-year, and 153 percent above its 2001 low point of ¥24,500 per ton.
Sections prices in Japan have mostly been below ¥40,000 per ton over the last decade.
The so-called "H-beam war" - an intermittent struggle for market share between mini-mills and integrated mills - ensured no substantial gains.
But today sections prices have surged to ¥67,000 per ton: an astonishing rise of 135 percent since mid 2002.

- MIDDLE EAST

HR coils from Ukraine and MMK Russia reached 600 - 620 US$/T CFR Dubai and further price increases are announced.
Plates from Ukraine moved up from 600 to more than 630 US$/T over the past weeks.
Beams were sold recently, for JIS sizes at 590 - 600 US$/T from Dongkuk Korea, for Euronorm sizes at 620-630 US$/T from Poland, for UB-UC form Indian Jindal Power at 625-635 US$/T, while Korean INI and Thailand sold at 640 - 660US$/T CFR Dubai for their size range.

- PROSPECTS

Short term prospects indicate modest price improvements in the flat products sector.
The gains for hot rolled coil could be slightly above those anticipated last month due to a rally in local Chinese prices in recent weeks.
Easing materials shortages, falling coke prices, reduced Chinese import demand ( from a rate of over 40m t/y early 2004, to about 10m t/y in recent months) will likely cause a slippage around the end of 2004.

The decline in long products demand from China has generated more availability in global markets.
The potential for oversupply of long products is still apparent, particularly with the prospects of a slowdown in the Chinese construction segment.
Average world prices in mid 2005 are expected to be lower than current figures.
With raw material and capacity shortages limiting the supply growth, and with steel inventories still being low, prices should however still remain at relatively high levels in 2005.

Stainless steel
.....................

World Stainless Steel Product Prices currently stand at close to their highest point of the last few years.

Grade 304 hot rolled coil prices are up by about 50pct., since this time last year,
showing the success that mills have had in passing on alloy costs to their customers.

A jump in world stainless production has added to the pressure on raw material supplies.

The current period of high nickel costs has been accompanied by increases in other inputs.
The ferrochrome price has doubled since the start of 2003, and non-alloy scrap has also surged in value.
Nickel of course has been the dominant factor in setting prices for austenitic stainless products.
The extraordinarily volatile LME settlement price plummeted from over $US17,000 in January to below $US11,000 in May, before recovering to around $US14,000 per ton at present.

With both nickel and chromium in fundamental under-supply, surcharges seem sure to remain the dominant force in the market for the rest of this year and probably beyond.

Stainless demand remains strong, but mills may find it difficult to raise basis prices.
