Modern Steel Mills may expand meltshop

Modern Steel Mills, commissioned in November 2001 with an 80,000 t/y billet capacity, is producing presently about 7,000 t/m of 100mm square billet in 5-6 metre lengths.
Modern Steel sells its billet to local re-rollers such as Sharq -Sohar in Oman , Al-Rostamani Eurogulf in Dubai, Gulf Steel Industries in Abu Dhabi, and UGS in Jubail - Saudi Arabia.
Modern Steel may expand its meltshop to cater for Gulf region's increasing billet demand but this would depend billet demand and on the price of steel scrap available.

Modern Steel was created by a group of Omani investors under the chairmanship of former government minister, Hammad Hamed Al-Ghafri.
Modern Steels has a 20-tonne electric arc furnace, a 20-tonne ladle furnace and a two-strand billet caster capable of producing 80-150mm sq billet. All the equipment for the steel plant was of Indian origin, supplied by 21st Century Engineering Services, from India.
  

Hadid Majan rebar mill inaugurated

Oman's second steel rolling mill "Hadid Majan", was inaugurated end 2002. With a capacity of 36KT/y of rebars of dia 8-32mm/year, it aims to roll soon 2000t of rebars per month.
The Indian built mill was promoted by chairman Sayyed Barghash Said Al Said, also member of the Omani royal family, and by the Omani P.Noushique, who has a background in rolling mills.

Located in the Al-Rusayl industrial area, Hadid Majan is likely to get part of their billets from their neighbours Modern Steel.
 

Corinth Pipe - Greed low bidder for Oman - UAE gas pipeline
2003 February 4

Corinth Pipeworks of Greece is low bidder at 6.1 US$ million for the contract to supply 45 kilometers 24" X65 steel pipes for the Oman-UAE gas link. The other bidders for the contract included Kawasaki Heavy Industries at 6.2 US$ million, and a venture of NKK Corporation with Mitsubishi Corporation, at $7.9 million. The Oman Gas Company awarded in January the contract to install the pipeline, to India’s Dodsal.
 

OGC awards 45km 24" gas pipe line to Dodsal
2003 January 25

India’s Dodsal received a letter of award for the contract to build a gas export pipeline from Mahdah, near Buraimi, to Al-Ain in the UAE. The contract, placed by Oman Gas Company (OGC), involves the installation of a 45-kilometre-long, 24-inch-diameter branch line that will convey about 120 million cubic feet a day of Omani gas into the network of Abu Dhabi-based Dolphin Energy (DEL).
 

L&T bags Equipment supply contract for 2 new ammonia plants
2003 January 14

Larsen & Toubro -India has bagged the equipment supply contract by the Oman India Fertisliser Company.
The contract includes designing and making ammonia converters, reformed gas waste heat boiler systems, ammonia separators, alloy steel reactors, and 2 primary reformer packages for Omifco’s two new ammonia plants at Sur. The main contractor is a joint venture of Snamprogetti and Technip-Coflexip.
 

Bids Due for Harweel Pipeline
2002 November 6

Commercial bids are expected mid-December for the contract to build the Harweel cluster pipeline.
The bidders, include Al-Hassan Engineering Company, Oman Construction Company (TOCO), Galfar Engineering & Contracting, Special Technical Services, GPS and Oman Steel Fabricators & Mechanical Company.
Technical offers were submitted in September for the projectto install 67 kilometers 12" pipeline and 33 kilometers 8" pipeline, to pump gas and condensate from the Harweel well fields into the network of PDO.
 
 

100 km pipeline Installation : Bids expected end September.
2002 September 26

 

Technical offers are due before end September, for installation of 67 kilometers of 12-inch and 33 kilometers of eight-inch steel pipes, which will bring gas and condensate from the Haweel well fields to PDO's gas network. Installation of pigging stations along the pipeline, is also included in this project, which is estimated at $10 million-15 million.

The expected contractors to bid are 7 Omani companies
- Oman Construction Company (TOCO), Al-Hassan Engineering, Arabian Industries, Oman Steel Fabricators & Mechanical Company, Galfar Engineering & Contracting, Special Technical Services, GPS,and
-Dodsal from India.

Commercial offers are to be submitted in November2002.
