Introduction

Year 2009 was unusual for Chinese steel market in terms of international trade. Imports increased by 38% year-on-year while exports decreased by 66%. China might become a net importer of steel again in 3 years.

Global Economy - Global economy has undoubtedly shown signs of recovery. However, the Dubai’s debt crisis at the end of November reminds us that the domino effect of the financial meltdown is far from disappearance.

China Steel Market - In contrast, China is busy to boost domestic demand. On one hand, the revival of trade protectionism and antidumping practices make the steel export more difficult. On the other hand, the ups and downs of the exchange market put the steel importation back to the market spotlight. Although China steel mills gradually lift operating rates on positive market signals, global economy and international market demand do not fully recover. The 600+ million tonnes capacities will be challenged by market demand in 2010.
